DEAR TED “I’m feeling stuck, how do I move on from here without letting my organisation down?”

Posted on 4th July, 2019

It’s a classic situation that many find themselves in, torn between a loyalty to the organisation, to their boss or to their staff or customers v their own need to progress and/or get fulfilment from their work.

The first thing to remember, especially in larger places, is that you will be dropped in a heartbeat if the organisation needs to reduce it’s costs, or it merges, or it changes direction or it feels that you aren’t pulling your weight any more.

So you really do have to be a bit selfish, think through all the things that you want from a change, seek the help of close friends or a mentor and then start applying for new roles externally or setting out on your own.

OR! Sometimes the best place to start is where you work!!! You’ve already proved yourself and people know you. Set out what you would now love to do, show your passion and interest and maybe start by taking on a short term project to see if it works for you and others.

The key thing to remember is that, if you do leave, or move on internally, others will have the chance to up their game and fill the space you have left, and people who needed your support can still come to you for a chat in the transition phase or become your mentees, and the wider organisation will have benefitted from your time with them and will now benefit from a new structure taking over.
